How Calculatopia selects sources, explains assumptions, dates its content, and handles corrections to its educational financial tools.

Last updated:

Calculatopia publishes educational calculators and explanations. Our aim is to make the result understandable: what was calculated, which inputs and sources it uses, and where the estimate stops being useful.

Sources and attribution

We prefer primary sources for definitions, rules, and datasets. For the current tools these include the Federal Reserve Board's SCF, CFPB deposit-yield rules, and IRS information on interest income. Links appear alongside the relevant explanation so readers can inspect the original context.

We distinguish source data from our calculations. Survey-derived means, medians, and percentile estimates are labeled with their survey year, population, and dollar basis. A link to an agency is a citation, not an endorsement or partnership.

Calculations and limitations

The Methodology documents formulas, compounding assumptions, rounding, and the SCF weighting and tie convention. Explanations should match the implemented behavior. Examples use illustrative values rather than live offers or forecasts.

Calculator verification covers known results, invalid inputs, and relevant numerical edge cases. The SCF import checks its source files and compares derived estimates with the public reference tables. These automated and source-reproduction checks are not a claim of independent human review, statistical certification, or guaranteed correctness. Survey estimates still have uncertainty, and we do not publish confidence intervals that have not been calculated.

Content should explain material exclusions, such as a CD estimate's omitted fees and day-count conventions or a household survey's limited relevance to individual wealth. We do not give personalized financial, investment, tax, or legal advice.

Dates and changes

“Last updated” records an actual content edit. A source's publication date, a survey year, and a page's update date describe different things; we keep them distinct. We do not change dates simply to imply freshness.

When a formula, source release, or material explanation changes, the affected content and its update date should change together. Replacing a pinned survey source requires checking its definitions and reproducing the relevant benchmarks. Until that work is complete, the page must retain an accurate label for the older data or explain why an estimate is unavailable.

Corrections

Please report a suspected error through Contact. Include the page URL, the statement or result at issue, a primary source if available, and an example using invented numbers. Do not send account statements, passwords, or sensitive financial records.

We assess a report against the implementation and cited evidence. Confirmed issues should be corrected in the relevant tool or explanation; material changes should explain what changed where readers encounter the affected content. A report is not a promise of a particular outcome or response time.

Independence and responsibility

The public calculators are free to use and currently have no paid product placements, advertising scripts, or affiliate product recommendations. If a future page includes sponsorship or an affiliate relationship, that relationship should be disclosed near the relevant content and distinguished from the calculation method.

The site operator is responsible for publication and corrections. We do not attach invented author names, credentials, reviewer identities, or agency affiliations to the content.
