Check the numbers, date, and ownership scope behind your total.
What is net worth?
Net worth = total assets − total debts
Net worth is the value of what you own minus what you owe. Add your assets at their current estimated value, then subtract outstanding debts. Use the same date and ownership scope for both sides. Net worth is a balance-sheet snapshot, not your income or cash available to spend.
Investor.gov — Figure Out Your FinancesCheck what you included
Include cash, savings, investments, retirement accounts, property, vehicles, and other assets that have a supportable value. Then check mortgages, auto loans, student loans, credit cards, and other debts. Count each item once. If you include a property's full value as an asset, include its outstanding mortgage as a debt.
A simple example
If your assets total $150,000 and your debts total $100,000, your net worth is $50,000. This is a hypothetical example, not a target or a U.S. average. For a category-by-category checklist and examples of negative net worth, use the detailed calculator and guide.
Net Worth Calculator & GuideCommon questions
Does my home count?
Yes. Include its current estimated market value and count the outstanding mortgage separately. Do not also add home equity as another asset.
Can net worth be negative?
Yes. A negative result means the debts included exceed the assets included. Review missing items and keep the same ownership scope before comparing results over time.
Can I compare my result with U.S. households?
Yes, if your inputs represent the SCF family scope. Review the household definition and confirm the total before opening the percentile calculator. An individual balance sheet is not automatically comparable.
